About the role
We are looking for a WordPress Engineer for a short-term contract delivering website builds and improvements. You will turn an agreed brief into reliable pages and features, with attention to how the website works for visitors and for the business maintaining it.
This role suits someone who can work through an existing WordPress setup as well as build new pages. You should be comfortable explaining the trade-offs between a theme change, a plugin and a small custom solution, and choosing an approach that fits the actual requirement and ongoing maintenance needs.
What you will work on
- Build responsive pages from approved designs and content, checking layout, typography and interactions across screen sizes.
- Develop and maintain WordPress themes, blocks, plugins and integrations where they are part of the agreed scope.
- Improve loading performance, accessibility and technical SEO, including headings, metadata, internal links and crawl settings.
- Investigate plugin conflicts, broken layouts, form issues and other defects, then explain the cause and proposed fix.
- Use staging, backups and version control to review changes and prepare releases with a clear recovery path.
- Document configuration, dependencies and handover steps so the business can manage routine content updates after delivery.
What you will bring
- Practical WordPress development experience, with live website examples and a clear explanation of your role in each build.
- Confidence with PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and WordPress theme and plugin development.
- Experience with the WordPress block editor and working within an existing site's editing approach.
- An understanding of web accessibility, performance testing, website security, hosting, backups and updates.
- A careful approach to testing and the ability to communicate progress, dependencies and technical decisions in plain language.
A focused first project
An initial project could be a focused website build, a set of page updates or improvements to an existing WordPress site. We will agree the functionality, integrations, content responsibilities, acceptance checks and handover before development begins.
Short-term contract and remote working
This is a short-term, project-based contract. We will agree the scope, deliverables, expected hours, start date, duration and rate before work begins. It is not a permanent position, and further work is a separate discussion.
The role is fully remote for applicants based in Australia. Our business is based in Melbourne. We will agree how we communicate, share progress and review work so you can plan around the project commitments.
