AI SEO and GEO: A Practical Guide for Business
AI SEO and GEO describe work that helps a business become easier to discover and understand in AI-assisted search. GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. For a business owner, the useful question is what needs to improve on your website and wider public presence, and how you will know whether the work is helping.
Understand what each term means
Traditional SEO helps useful pages be found through search engines. AI SEO extends that discussion to search experiences that use generated answers. GEO focuses on how a business, topic or source is represented in those answers. Providers use these labels differently, so compare the actual work in a proposal.
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says existing SEO practices remain relevant. There is no special AI markup or separate AI text file required. A page must meet normal search eligibility requirements, and meeting them does not guarantee inclusion. Other platforms have their own retrieval systems, so a result observed in one should not be treated as a result across all of them.
Make the business easy to verify
Start with a clear description of your services, the people you help, where you work and how a project begins. Give visitors enough detail to distinguish a website build from an ongoing SEO engagement or a workflow automation project. Keep contact and business information consistent across the profiles you actually maintain.
Support claims with evidence you have permission to publish. A portfolio can demonstrate what your team has built. Describe the product, your contribution and the features people can explore. Client testimonials and performance figures need a real source. If those are not available yet, publish a clear process and practical examples without presenting them as customer results.
Answer the questions buyers actually compare
List the decisions customers face before they contact you. For a website project, that might include content responsibilities, mobile usability, ownership and support. For SEO, it might include implementation, reporting and the difference between visibility and qualified enquiries. Build a useful answer to each distinct question.
Connect those answers to the relevant service pages. Keep important information in readable text, and make sure headings and page titles describe what is actually on the page. Several near-identical articles aimed at variations of the same phrase usually make the site harder to maintain without giving readers much extra value.
Measure a repeatable sample, then track enquiries
Create a small set of realistic buyer questions for your services and market. Record the platform, date, wording and any location context for each check. Note whether your business was mentioned, whether a link was cited and whether the description was accurate. Repeat the same sample rather than selecting only favourable answers.
AI answers can vary between runs. Treat this as directional monitoring rather than a stable ranking table. Combine it with Search Console, identifiable referral traffic and actual enquiries. Google includes its AI features in the overall Web performance reporting, so that report should not be presented as a separate count of AI recommendations.
- Visibility: was the business mentioned in the sampled answer?
- Citation: did the answer link to a useful page?
- Accuracy: were the services and location described correctly?
- Business outcome: did a suitable customer enquire, and what did they say brought them here?
Ask for a defined first engagement
A useful starting scope can include a search and content baseline, a review of service information, agreed technical fixes and a measurement plan. Identify which pages will change, who will implement the work and what evidence is needed from your business. Separate optional publishing or outreach from the core scope.
At Context Aware, SEO, AI SEO and GEO are connected to website implementation. The aim is useful, verifiable information and a clear customer journey. We can agree a focused first project at competitive pricing, then use the findings to decide what deserves further investment.
